Made me laugh. Ive always seen it as referring to people as friends and buddies. One of my uncles who fought in Vietnam told me that friends there were someone you rarely talked to or less often cared about and buddies were someone you looked after all the time and always asked how they were...someone you "lay on a grenade for".
