Battles and stubble and wars and beards

I think we’re all fighting some war.
A war against addiction. A war against insecurity. A war against lust. A war against our past. A war against depression or discouragement.
Or we’re warring for someone who is falling away and screwing up their life, warring in prayer. A war to save a marriage or a business. A war to keep from going insane at a horrible job.
The problem with war is that it’s extended. It drags on. It looms larger as dark masses of troops multiply on the stormy horizon. It smothers the will of the human heart. Battering ram meets frailty.
Much better to focus on the battle.
Ahh…Battle…
Now here is something men were created for–strategy, tactics, eye-to-eye with my enemy on the field of battle. A well-rehearsed battle plan executed in a burst of adrenaline, sweat, blood, and teamwork.
If you want to win a war, you need to start winning some battles.
In my world, battles are days.
Can I win today? Today.
My facial hair has been waging a war against my face for about 15 years now. A beard war. It’s been a long, extended struggle. But when I win the daily stubble battle, I don’t worry about the beard war. I’m afraid though, that many men are waking up when they’re 70 looking like Rip Van Winkle. They ignored the stubble in their 20s, 30s, 40s…
“Therefore, we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed, day by day.” – 2 Cor 4:16
Today is the battle. The Gospel and grace are your weapons. Go.

I remember a mentor in college using this some idea to help me fight sin in my life…”Today, God, today, help me win this battle.” Narrowing it down makes it less overwhelming.
