Forget Baywatch, Hasselhoff just saved 100 lives!

“3.2% chance it happens.” That’s what I said.

I went to see Derek Webb in concert last night here in Atlanta. Derek is pretty active on Twitter and has a good following there (8000+). Before I went downtown, I had an idea that I thought would be funny. So I sent a tweet, thinking he might see it. It said, “Derek Webb, if you’ll say HASSELHOFF at some point during your concert tonight, I’ll donate $50 to @bloodwater (www.bloodwatermission.com).” My friend Roy Keely saw my tweet and got in on the bet too. Here’s the actual tweet below…

(In case you don’t know, Blood:Water Mission is an incredible ministry out of Nashville that builds wells for people in Africa. Every $1 donated provides clean water for one person in Africa for a year. BWM is also one of the sponsors of Derek’s tour right now.)

So I met a few friends before the concert for dinner and I told them about the Hasselhoff challenge. We laughed about it, and after that we walked over to Smith’s Olde Bar for the show. We waited in line to get in then made our way into the upstairs concert area.

Derek started the show by playing some songs off his new album, Stockholm Syndrome (which you should go download…here). About midway through the concert, he did an audience-requested acoustic set. He started playing “Somewhere North” which is an older song off Caedmon’s Call’s 40 Acres album. It’s a very slow, serious ballad. Everyone was tuned in. I’m standing there, kind of in a daze, when lo and behold I hear Derek sing…

I give you my life and all I am
But what have I to give
So I hand you a candid photograph of this Hasselhoff…

We went nuts! Every head in the place turned to look at our group cheering and going crazy.

After the song ended, Derek said, “There’s a guy in here who owes Blood:Water Mission $50. Can it be $100 since I worked it into a song? For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, go search for “Derek Webb Hasselhoff” on Twitter.” Unbelievable!

So here you go, Derek. I’m a man of my word and I upped the gift due to your awesomeness. Check’s in the mail today…

While you’re at it, go over to Blood:Water’s website at www.bloodwatermission.com. I wrote yesterday that this blog is worthless unless it motivates people to ACTION. I’m calling for everyone reading this to go over to the site and save ten lives with a $10 (or more) donation. (You can go eat lunch at Moe’s today or you can save ten lives…just sayin’).

I’m also calling on the King of Awesomeness Himself…David Hasselhoff to make a $10,000 donation to BWM. So if someone reading this happens to know DH, pass it along!

You can easily give by clicking here. If you make a donation, tweet about it and include the hashtag #hasselhoffchallenge. What are you waiting for….go give!

Hilarious! I would’ve gone absolutely nuts when he worked the Hoff into one of his songs. I’m pretty sure this is by far the most productive thing that Twitter has ever accomplished…..seriously!

I’m not sure that check counts as legal tender. BWM might not take it…

    Incredible story though!

My favorite part of this post is wondering how much you could give bloodwater if you hadn’t payed extra for the University of Alabama checks. :) – Sounds like I’m giving you crap for that, not really. Love what you’re doing. Just thought the Bama checks were funny.
