22 things going on with me right now
Posted on 21. Sep, 2009 by Brett in Etc
1. Got to hear my old pastor, Bob Flayhart (Oak Mtn. Presbyterian Church in Birmingham, AL) teach on Galatians a few weeks ago. One quote has stuck to me like velcro since then. “God would rather have you desperate for Christ than fixed.”
2. Getting excited about the upcoming Catalyst conference coming up in October. You’ll be hearing a lot more about this.
3. I’m officially a Twitter junkie. 1,600+ tweets in the last few months. Massive tweetage…
4. I have one credit card. And I paid it off recently. (small victories)
5. Starbucks continues to take my money. Had to reevaluate my budget. Seriously.
6. I currently DVR two shows–The Office and Parks & Recreation.
7. Haven’t been reading much lately. Need to fix that. But I have been slowly working through Made to Stick and it is terrific.
8. Went on vacation with my wonderful family recently. Seven grown-ups and four kids under 4 in one condo. I absolutely adore my nephews and niece.
9. My friend Gil was wearing these shoes the other day. I may get em too. What do you think?
10. My Crimson Tide is looking good. 3-0 including a big win over Virginia Tech. Planning on going to the Bama/UT and Bama/LSU games. Like every other God-fearing Bama fan, I think this is the year we go all the way :).
11. Been thinking a lot lately about the distance between the real me and the person I project myself as online. Blog on that forthcoming…but I have to think about it more.
12. Posted a link to an article by Perry Noble a while back that my Twitter friends retweeted relentlessly. You need to read it. 15 Ways to Destroy your Marriage
13. This week I get to see Derek Webb in concert AND dress like a pirate (not at the same time though).
14. The most common question I get these days is, “So how do you like Atlanta?”. Answer: I like it. I really do. It’s been a much easier transition than my previous moves to Birmingham and Nashville which felt like a tsunami hitting my feeble and pathetic soul. Having a bunch of friends in Atlanta has helped the transition a lot.
15. Big announcement here at TRAPPSTR in the coming days. Stay tuned.
16. I find Chad Ochocinco hilarious on Twitter. You should follow him (@Ogochocinco).
17. Contemplated doing the St. Jude half marathon in December, but I’m going to pass. Definitely going to do the Country Music Half Marathon in April of next year though. Thinking about getting up a crew and all doing it together. Email me if you’re interested.
18. Speaking of fitness. I did 4 sprint triathlons this summer with some great friends. Pretty proud of that. And thankful for the God-given health to do such things.
19. I’m thinking about devoting a whole week of blog posts to the topic of Twitter. Would you find that interesting?
20. In October, I’ll be appearing in criminal court via a subpoena regarding an incident I witnessed in June, 08. Can’t say a whole lot more than that.
21. Since TRAPPSTR.com has launched, two people have asked WHY I’m doing this blog. Thanks to those two people.
22. I’m so thankful for those of you who read this blog. You encourage the heck out of me. And I’m wildly interested in what’s going on in your life. Let us know in comments.

Last night before bed I read the blog post on “how to destroy a marriage”. I was having a hard time processing Mr Noble’s blog post in my sleep so I decided to get up and write out my thoughts. Besides, its 2:22 AM and I have a ridiculously long day tomorrow. I can’t let this keep me up!
Martin Luther said that being a Christian is someone who knows the difference between the Law and the Gospel. As a firm believer in Gospel (Grace’s triumph over Law) I felt like I wanted to speak out against this post. My problem with the blogpost isn’t that Mr. Noble is wrong in his assessment that affairs are bad. The issues that he mentions are very real and are currently destroying marriages hand over fist. Instead, my problem is that his prescription for a good marriage leaves no solution for a changed heart. In the same way, The 10 commandments aren’t wrong. In fact, they are perfect LOVE. The 10 Commandments though give us no power to do the thing which it commands. And unfortunately the commandments illicit the opposite reaction from us that is commanded (Romans 7:15).
The only thing that will allow any man to stand up against sexual temptation is for him to be broken in the reality of his own inability to obey God’s commandments and to rest in the Sovereign Grace of God.
You must know that I speak about this issue as a man who has felt the pain of sexual sin in his own life and marriage. I’m not removed from this conversation and I’m speaking from the perspective of a broken man whose life has been changed by radical grace (not from a nudge of the Law).
I don’t blame Mr. Noble for being sick and tired of seeing marriages fall apart. As a minister he should grieve this. I only fear that his solution will drive his congregation more into Pharisee-ism and away from brokenness and truth. May we not forget the beauty of Ezekiah 36:26- ” I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.”
God wants to remove the burden of the Law with the His irresistible Grace. Acquiesce and let him.

6. You should add Wild Pacific HD on Discovery to that list
9. Those shoes only make you cooler… just a warning.
16. Chad “Ochocinco” is a headcase, but not a respectable human being.
22. If you wanna know what I’m doing… I’m using tax dollars allocated by President Obama to reconstruct the Mississippi State Wireless Integrated Network (MSWIN) which hurricane Katrina destroyed. I’m slowly gaining knowledge and weight. And I’m thouroughly enjoying the blog. Keep the good stuff coming.
